ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Twenty Years of Teaching Reading, Reasoning, and Analysis

David Marrufo, MA

I earned a B.A. in English with Highest Honors from UC Berkeley and an M.A. in Philosophy from San Francisco State University.

In my teaching, I saw students asked to answer increasingly difficult reading questions without first being taught a systematic way to approach the text. I developed ARC I to teach those methods explicitly and give students repeated practice using them.

Live instruction lets me hear a student’s reasoning, see where an explanation breaks down, and give immediate coaching while we read together.

Questions About Live Online Instruction

Is ARC the same as online reading tutoring?

ARC I and ARC II are structured reading courses rather than drop-in homework help. Students learn a connected system for understanding passages, analyzing ideas, and supporting answers with evidence. One-on-one instruction is available, but it follows the ARC curriculum. High school sessions can be tailored more directly to a student’s current assignments and goals.

Are classes limited to students in the San Francisco Bay Area?

No. Advanced Reading Course is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but instruction is delivered live online. Students in other Pacific-time communities may enroll when the available schedule works for their family.

Are lessons live or prerecorded?

Lessons are taught live by David Marrufo, MA. Students can explain their reasoning, ask questions, receive immediate feedback, and revise their thinking while working with the text.

Which program is appropriate for my child?

ARC I serves students in Grades 3–8 and teaches the core reading and evidence methods. ARC II serves recommended students in Grades 5–8 who have completed ARC I. Personalized High School Reading & Writing instruction is available for students in Grades 9–12. Families may book a consultation when they are unsure where to begin.
